More than one hundred years have passed since Karl Marx's death in 1883, and we must still ask, how well do we really know him? Socialists the world over would echo Engels' words, "We all owe what we are to him," while scholars have produced a mountainous body of research--testimony to an apparantly boundless interest in the man, his ideas, and the lines of inquiry he opened up. With regard to trade unions and the labor movement, however, Marx's (and Engels') theoretical legacy remains largely unknown. Surely, strikes and trade unions were hardly a matter of indifference to the authors of the call: Workers of all lands, unite! Indeed, Marx claimed for himself "as much experience in the trade-union field as any of my contemporaries." Yet, strangely, historians have neglected this question: Did Marx and Engels carry out a systematic analysis of strikes and trade unions in capitalist society? And did they assign them a role in any transition to socialism? Is there, in other words, a Marxist theory of trade unions? In this volume virtually everything Marx and Engels ever wrote on strikes and trade unions has been collected for the first time. These extracts clearly establish that the founders of Marxism in no way failed to produce a complete and unambiguous theory of trade unionism. They also throw light on the immense historical part played by Marx and Engels in helping to establish the modern labor movement. And they include vivid, often eyewitness accounts of many of the greatest strikes and labor struggles of the last century
